Hey everyone. Sorry I've been so slack on this blog recently. I'm in my final semester of graduate school and will likely post less and less on here until the end of the semester. In the mean time, I thought you all might like some updates. I haven't been able to record as much recently as I'd like to, but aim to get back to it in May. We all use the internet. The internet IS information. At the top of the ALA's page for "Libraries and Intellectual Freedom", there is an excellent quote:

“Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions. It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us.”—Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, “The One Un-American Act”. Nieman Reports, vol. 7, no. 1 (Jan. 1953): p. 20.

The SOPA and PIPA acts aim to do just that: to restrict free thought and free speech. If you don't already know what these acts would mean if they were passed, you should watch the video above. These acts have already instigated a 24 hour black-out protest earlier this week, in which several sites (including participants such as Wikipedia, Google, and Mozilla) shut down or blacked out their pages in an effort to further spread the word about SOPA/PIPA and to get more citizens to sign the petition to stop these acts from being passed. According to many articles, including this one:

"Google Inc. said today it collected more than 7 million signatures from the U.S. for its online petition to Congress during an Internet protest against anti- piracy legislation backed by Hollywood." - Jan. 19, 2011 (Bloomberg)

You can read more about the blackout via Washington Post's article .And it's still not too late to sign that petition and spread the word! Visit this webpage, http://fightforthefuture.org/pipa, and sign the petition. Doing nothing is the worst thing you can do.

The library I work for, like the majority of libraries in North America, adheres to and abides by the ALA's Library Bill of Rights and stances on Intellectual Freedom.

As one of the core values of the American Library Association (ALA), intellectual freedom is the right to seek, receive, hold, and disseminate information... “It provides for free access to all expressions of ideas through which any and all sides of a question, cause, or movement may be explored” (Intellectual Freedom and Censorship Q & A).

According to the ALA’s Intellectual Freedom Manual (7th edition) :

“Censorship to restrict or suppress information for almost any reason (e.g., moral guardianship or political purpose) is absolutely opposed to the principles of intellectual freedom. Censorship flourishes when no one safeguards intellectual freedom.”

The ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee defines censorship as a “change in the access status of material, based on the content of the work and made by a governing authority or its representatives. Such changes include exclusion, restriction, removal, or age/grade level changes.”

The SOPA and PIPA acts are nothing more than censorship of the highest level. Let's all do what we can to spread the word about what these acts will mean if they pass. It's our duty, not only as Americans, but as supporters of intellectual freedom and human rights. Visit this webpage, http://fightforthefuture.org/pipa, and sign the petition.

Seeping Through the Veil of the Unconscious - Motion Sickness of Time Travel

"My first experience of MSOTT’s music was the sublime 'Electric Rain' mix for mnml ssgs. The tracklist reads like a who’s who of the synth world, made up entirely of low-fi gems released in criminally small quantities on CD-R and cassette. Seeping was originally produced as a run of 80 tapes in 2010 and was repressed in similarly small numbers by Digitalis in 2011. I was extremely lucky to get hold of the third edition (white vinyl, catalogue no. 'digiv032', for all the trainspotters). It was certainly worth the wait and is quite simply the most beautiful, emotive hour of music I have ever heard.

Rachel Evans, the goddess behind the moniker, is clearly influenced by nature and the mysticism of the forest; reflections from her log cabin studio in LaGrange, Georgia. The tracks feel organic. Not acoustic, but, equally, not purely electronic. Evans laments in her Siren tones over hazy kosmische pulses, and a guitar can even be heard on 'Mental Projection'. You can never quite decipher what she says, but the vocals transmogrify the sounscapes into something more accessible and human than her peers' offerings. Evans' aim with MSOTT was to make her voice sound as beautiful as possible. The voice here is the music. The synths are extra. And the synths themselves are incredible.

Considering Seeping is a collection of six tracks, each of unique character, there is a surprising coherency to the album. You are aware of the beginnings and ends, but in the middle you float, unaware of the passing of time. The album isn't warm, uplifting ambience, nor is it dark, soul destroying drone. Instead, it strikes a perfect balance along the spectrum somewhere between melancholy and longing."

It's one of the most impressive pieces we've heard by him, charting a dramatic, rolling topography of Kosmische astral projections, gravity-defying synth harmonics and passages of mind-bending electronic chaos with a steady hand and romantic vision. Review for "White Candle" CS

Briefly, 'White Candle' is a classic. A young woman named Rachel Evans releases a number of ever improving synth instrumental albums and extended plays. Her partner, for want of a thesuarus in finding a more apt word, Nova Scotia Arms, does likewise.

They release splits and they release actual colabs under the banner of Quiet Evenings. All of these releases are good to very good indeed.

Of the two, it's MSOTT who comes up with the first bona-fide don't argue classic - not only a classic in the genres within which they might be usually confined and bagged, but an honest to goodness across the board release which should be listened to and enjoyed, uh....I've lost my train.

Oh look - dont expect fireworks here, though. This is subdued stuff. This is synthesiser music. This is deeply thoughtful and restrained. This is the kind of stuff that might put sleepy-headed people to sleep.

Rachel Evans brings something new to the table with each excursion here. There are always fresh sonic happenings to be mixed together and recorded.

Perfect example of this is the utterly simple 'Binah', which instrumentation is really not much more than a low blurbly shifting synth, an organ and voices in the middle distance and surrounds. Here she knows just how much melody to include and not to include, how to uncomplicate.

Did I fail to mention that she uses her voice here and there, too?

Anyway...a classic.

Tucked into some remote woods in Georgia, Rachel and Grant Evans have created a kind of mom-and-pop drone factory. Between their duo Quiet Evenings, Grant's Nova Scotian Arms, and Rachel's Motion Sickness of Time Travel, they've spun reams of drone, mostly on small-run cassettes and CD-Rs. Of the three projects, MSOTT leans most toward song-like structures.
Though her work is often meditative and abstract, filled with busy synths and widescreen reverb, Evans has a knack for shaping subtle rhythms, slow crescendos, and the wordless phrasings of her own voice. That voice is more prominent than ever before on Luminaries & Synastry, the best MSOTT effort to date. It's not quite right to say Evans' singing is the center of these songs-- each piece is too unified to let any element dominate. But there's something uncanny about the way her voice melts with her drifting tones, as if it's both responding to the music and spawning it. (That effect is mirrored in the fluid visual montages Evans made for "Day Glow" and "Late Day Sun Silhouettes"). Such circular motion produces the feel of a sonic Möbius strip, with each song looping in on itself until time seems to stand still.
This illusion of timelessness might suggest that the name Motion Sickness of Time Travel (taken from William Burroughs' novel The Soft Machine) is inappropriate, but in fact it's quite apt. Though her soothing atmospheres are never exactly queasy, Evans' way of making time elastic-- unpredictably stretching and shrinking it-- produces a kind of mesmerizing disorientation. Often it feels like she's re-enacting the fuzzy, time-defying boundary between consciousness and sleep: Drift into her music, and you might feel like you’re drowsily blinking to make out figures in the dark, or waking from a nap-long dream that seemed to last a day.
Which might be why, despite being relatively short for drone pieces, the songs on Luminaries & Synastry feel as long and developed as those of any previous MSOTT work. So a track like "Ascendant", with its misty tones that cast even dewier shadows, can come as close to infinity in six minutes as, say, Spacemen 3's epic "An Evening of Contemporary Sitar Music" can in 45. It might seem like a stretch to place MSOTT in such lofty company so soon, butLuminaries & Synastry sounds ready and willing to stand the test of timelessness Evans made for it.

during the last few months of 2010, rachel evans & i sent a lot of ideas and thoughts back & forth via email in an effort to create something truly special with her "luminaries & synastry" album. rachel worked on and recorded so much incredible music during that period that it became a major undertaking in-and-of itself to pare down everything she'd recorded into a single, stellar 45 minute document. after weeks of deliberation, we settled on a tracklist. the problem, then, was that there were so many other fantastic pieces of music that didn't make the cut. so we put our heads together again and came up with the idea of doing a companion tape that included the best of those outtakes plus two tracks from the very-limited/impossible to find "sistrum" 3" CDR. with that i give you "white candle." edition of 200 copies, chrome tapes w/ art by francesco de gallo (hobo cult) This tape is now sold out from Digitalis, but will be at the following distros soon: discriminate music, tomentosa, mimaroglu, boa melody bar, experimedia, or meditations.

Hooker Vision will have copies in our distro soon too, as well as copies of Dreamcatcher (Hobo Cult Records). Or you can pick up a copy at a live show. Motion Sickness of Time Travel will be playing Wednesday, Aug. 24 at the Goat Farm in Atlanta along with Crow Hill Gnostic Temple and Nova Scotian Arms.

For an indefinite time I clung to the machine as it swayed and vibrated, quite unheeding how I went, and when I brought myself to look at the dials again I was amazed to find where I had arrived. One dial records days, and another thousands of days, another millions of days, and another thousands of millions. Now, instead of reversing the levers, I had pulled them over so as to go forward with them, and when I came to look at these indicators I found that the thousands hand was sweeping round as fast as the seconds hand of a watch — into futurity”.

With her debut album Seeping Through The Veil Of The Unconscious resulting in Motion Sickness of Time Travel being propelled to the forefront of many experimental music fan’s consciousness, Rachel Evans returns with the full-length Luminaries & Synastry, released on Digitalis.
When an artist gets such widespread and vocal acclaim from critics and fans alike, one tends to expect either of two situations; an overhyped flavour of the month or someone who is genuinely redefining a given genre through their music. Motion Sickness of Time Travel certainly falls in the latter camp and this second full length album offers music created with instruments and tones which are perfectly normal in of themselves, but somehow they culminate to form something new. Take the most formless vocal harmonies of Blondie’s Debbie Harry and perhaps add a little of French synth punk-rock pioneers Metal Urbain and then we may begin to approach a hint of Evans’ sound, but still not quite, she really is original.
The album opens with Luminaries and one is reduced to searching for metaphors in an attempt to explain the strange sound with words. An ambient pulsing synth leads the piece and Evans forms a sound of her own, steeped in LFO harmonies, with a definite uplifting timbre. The rhythmic electronic synthesis continues forward into Luminaries & Synastry and the artist conjures audial images of a world reminiscent of H.G. Wells’ Utopian vision for the future.
This unique, futuristic sound continues with third number Late Day Sun Silhouettes and Evans’ methods and style remains difficult to pin down. This is the crux of Luminaries & Synastry – the more one attempts to define Rachel’s intentions, the further they slip away from grasp. Better instead to enjoy the whirling, strange and very much otherworldly musical journey.
Luminaries & Synastry is an album comprising eleven tracks of a quite particular tone, yet it still sees Evans experimenting in a truly original way. It is truly a beautiful and forward thinking work of electronic tones, achieving much with its mood elevating harmonies. Fitting then that it is a Summer release as it shall no doubt prove a soundtrack to the next few months of long days and warm nights.

"Motion Sickness of Time Travel's Rachel Evans has had an incredibly busy year but finally returns to Digitalis with the proper follow-up to 2010's acclaimed Seeping Through the Veil of the Unconscious. Over the course of numerous limited releases, Evans has showcased her immense talent to construct floating sound worlds that immerse the listener in an aural cocoon. With Luminaries & Synastry, she is ready to unleash a whole different kind of voodoo.

Recorded through the latter part of 2010, Luminaries & Synastry represents Motion Sickness of Time Travel's most focused and definitive work to date. These songs are darker, more condensed and dialed-in than ever with Evans voice sitting even more prominently in the mix. Her synth work is effortless and mesmerizing, adding the perfect accompaniment to her vocals which are, as ever, the star of the show.

On the opener, “Luminaries,” rhythmically hypnotic synth chords float underground while Evans pierces the darkness with her voice. It's perfect foreshadowing for what is to come on the rest of the album. Its sister track, “Synastry,” is minimal and haunted. It revels in its simplicity, finding a perfect balance of grounded effervescence and astral projection. Taken together, the combined forces of “Luminaries” & “Synastry” are a bittersweet title set.

Skeletal rhythms and sunburned arpeggios return on album centerpiece, “Day Glow.” Dripping in miserable beauty, the song takes vague kosmische nods and paints a thick coat of sublime whimsy to fill all the cracks. When it reaches its peak it is absolutely devastating. Everything in this song embodies all the best things about Motion Sickness of Time Travel.

Heading toward the finish line, bombarded by gorgeous, revolving synthesizer passages on “Eight Nineteen” and the blissed-out “The Walls Were Dripping Stars,” it's clear that Luminaries & Synastry is something quite special in the ever-expanding discography of one of 2010's finest new voices. Even though only a year has passed since her last opus, this is a massive leap ahead.

Her follow-up proper, 'Luminaries & Synastry' is a divine, subtly dizzying descent from the heights of that album, catching Rachel cocooned in a feather-like freefall to more pastoral climes without ever actually touching down to solid ground. The simplicity of instinctively layered, ethereal vocals and seemingly infinite arpeggios make for a mesmerising take on pop music, where the atmospheric composition contains far more nitrous oxide in a lower pressure system, and duly everyone floats about dazed in a state of post-rave/orgasmic bliss. The recently released Mass Ornament/Motion Sickness of Time Travel Split tape from Hooker Vision has just recieved an excellent review on Boomkat! Check it out HERE, or read it below:

**Edition of 100 copies. Full colour j-card with insert.** Essential and
bewitching split release from two ladies who were behind some of last year's
most arresting releases: Mass Ornament aka Digitalis co-owner Eden Hemming Rose (Altar Eagle/Wax Ghost), and Hooker Vision co-curator, Rachel Evans aka Motion
Sickness Of Time Travel. Eden's side opens into fluttering 3D ambient space
fragranced with murmured poetry and subtle contrasts of crackly concrète
texturing in 'Fighting Aluminium Cans'. Next, 'Gift' is more abstracted,
foregrounding minimal, sloshing tribal drum cadences against warped and
disintegrating field recordings to sound like a dreamed recording of pygmy
drummers washed with mild acid. Her third and final contribution is the
beautifully languorous 'Lexus Dilemna', where layers of glistening drone gilded
with her vocals seem to ascend and expand due the warmth of their own loveliness
while rumbling bass pulses pass by fathoms below. On the other side Rachel Evans
takes our breath away again after the incredible 'Seeping Through The Veil Of
Unconscious'. The feeling of swooning, slow freefall in 'Shadow' is simply
exquisite, as though our very atoms are dissolving into her gossamer mattress of
synth tones whilst we're gently gyroscoped between stereo swirling
constellations. This quietly melts into the blissed sensations of 'Fade Away', a
gaseous formation of harmonised synth hues evoking the magical potential of
invisibility with a gorgeous New Age naivety. Very warmly recommended!!!

"Transcending Spheres is from Georgia-based Grant and Rachel Evans as Quiet
Evenings, and though it's their debut debut full-length under that name the duo
(who also co-manage the Hooker Vision label) has amassed more than fifty
releases for various labels under their individual guises, Grant as Nova Scotian
Arms and Rachel as Motion Sickness of Time Travel. Using a modest amount of gear (guitars, synthesisers, and voice), Quiet Evenings threads elements of ambient, drone, and ‘70s synthesizer music into graceful settings that feel alive and
responsive to the directional possibilities that present themselves in the
moment. All but one of the seven tracks are in the seven- to ten-minute range,
which means a couple of things: first of all, the material unfolds of its own
natural accord without any sense that the creators are rushing to shoehorn a
given piece into a predetermined temporal structure; secondly, the generous
track lengths allow the pieces to mutate multiple times and thereby defy easy
categorization. As a result, a representative piece such as “Departing” sets
sail in restrained ambient-drone mode but, abetted by the pulsations of
kosmische musik, slowly blossoms into something not only more aggressive but
genre-transcending too. “Fog Hammers” gradually subsumes delicate electric
guitar shadings within a reverberant mass that, like the first track, gradually
changes shape by building in intensity and growing louder in the process. One of
the most appealing things about Transcending Spheres is its mid-album
gravitatation towards the quieter end of the spectrum. Halfway through the
recording, “Inevitability of Deca,” for instance, inhabits a melancholy,
dream-like space where distant transmissions flutter through the air, suggestive
of planetary systems light years away, while “Finality” opts for meditative,
even mournful moodscaping, this time one ornamented with hushed vocal accents.
Further intergalaxial sojourns emerge when the title track guides Quiet
Evenings' fine collection to a heady close."

Thought I'd share some rare, early tracks of mine. These are the "songs" that paved the way to MSOTT's current sound. Most of them are from before I ever conceived MSOTT. Many of them are actually remixes of my early singer-songwriter-type songs. I have this album set up as $5 (or more) to download, as a way to help us raise some funds for the upcoming Quiet Evenings LP on Hooker Vision. "Inspired by the near ineffable beauty of new albums by Grouper and Motion Sickness of Time Travel, we've induced a séance (of sorts) with similarly suggestive music by a (nearly) all-female cast of artists working a tangled web of electronic folk, shoegaze, techno and drone pop. We've honed in on the ghostly vocal tones which thread through these 14 pieces - from Grouper's shadowy soul to the more visceral yet undeniably affecting Motion Sickness Of Time Travel's 'Telepathy', conducting an experiment in transcendental communication that taps into a history of EVP and a fascination with ghostly electronic voices stretching back to Thomas Edison. On a grander scale, Chelsea Wolfe channels the dilapidated elegance of 'Benjamin', while Tara Burke's Fursaxa summons music box spirits on 'Birds Inspire Epic Bards' and the irrepressible Maja S.K. Ratkje joins Lasse Marhaug for an uncomfortable episode of impossible to contain cat-cries. Zola Jesus and Skirt, meanwhile, view machine driven emotions from alternately ambiguous angles - finishing off a bewitching, mystical set."

"I discovered Rachel Evan's music in a somewhat roundabout way, as I stumbled into some music videos that she directed while I was searching for something else on Vimeo. As luck would have it, the first one that I watched happened to be one for her own project and I was intrigued enough by her blurred, melancholy multimedia vision to immediately track down this vinyl reissue of a long-unavailable 2010 cassette. Notably, Brad Rose has described that cassette as one of the best demos that Digitalis has ever received. It seems like a lot of people agree with him, as the first printing of this record sold-out before most of us were even aware that it existed (it has since been reprinted though).

One noteworthy aspect of this reissue is that it leaves off one of the six songs from the original cassette: "The Alchemical Dream," a piece which sounds like the beginnings of a particularly ghostly Aphex Twin remix. While not a bad song, it doesn't quite match the mood of the rest of the album, so scrapping it was a good idea. Removing an album's weak spots for a reissue is a much, much better idea than bloating it with bonus tracks that weren't good enough to be included the first time around–I hope this practice catches on in a big way (even though it was probably motivated solely by time constraints here). Another key aspect about this release is that it has one of the most apt titles ever: music does not get much more soft-focus, drifting, and blissed-out than this. This record inarguably seeps.

Evans began her musical career, rather perversly, as a singer-songwriter, a vocation that she successfully eradicated all vestiges of here: her vocals and lyrics are reverb-ed into oblivion and these five pieces are not structured in anything approaching a traditional song-like way (and she certainly never picks up a guitar). Instead, she constructs her soundscapes from her own multi-tracked, heavily processed, and unintelligible vocals. Unintelligible in a good way, of course, as they swoop and whisper dreamily over an array of subtle synthesizer pulses and drones. That pairing sounds quite sublime in the twinkling and meditative opener "Clairvoyance," which is one of the album’s two clear highlights. The other is the breathy and gently throbbing "Telepathy," which manages to sound both drugged and sexy in all the right ways.

I also enjoyed the lazily burbling "Auto Suggestion," but the other two songs did not connect with me much at all (particularly the 12-minute pastoral krautsynth epic "Magnetism"). Also, as much as I enjoyed the bulk of this record, it never truly grabbed me: it feels like there is something important missing. Seeping Through the Veil of the Unconscious is pleasant and inspired, but as not revelatory as the buzz surrounding it suggests. I think that elusive element might be "personality," but that sounds like a more withering statement than it actually is. Heavy reverb certainly sounds spectral and cool, but it also has a distinct tendency to strip most of the character from vocals: something else needs to fill that void. Rachel's excellent videos solve that problem beautifully, but her music definitely needs something else if it is going to hold up well on its own. Of course, it is possible that she has already realized that, as the one song that I've heard from her recent split double-cassette with her husband (Nova Scotian Arms) boasts a pretty great understated hook that weirdly reminds me of Clock DVA. Regardless, Evans definitely has gotten the tough part out of the way: she has forged a very likable aesthetic all her own and made the world notice. Now she just needs to finish perfecting it."

*Strictly limited second pressing of one of the albums of the year so far - this time on White Vinyl* Sublime temporal intervention of fragile drone pop from Motion Sickness Of Time Travel, the solo alias of Hooker Vision co-curator, Rachel Evans. Between graduating from college and starting grad school last year she committed these five tracks onto a cassette for Digitalis which has since been remastered onto emerald green vinyl by Brad Rose, who hailed the album as "the best demo I've ever received" - and it's really easy to believe him. 'Seeping Through The Veil of the Unconscious' finds Evans' individual sound suspended like a time-lapsed image of Grouper's angelic reveries or a more minimal, gaseous take on the sound made by Stellar Om Source. This is the sort of music you inhale with your ears, catching its subtly harmonised notes in your pleasure centres like some tingling rare space gas. Gazing out into the twinkling slow synth haemorrhage 'Clairvoyance', wordless vocals drift by like space dust on an endless cosmic voyage, while 'Mental Projection' is laced with the same kind of after-hours substance that informed the finest post-Detroit UK electronica. However, the album's guiding star has to be the radiant 'Telepathy', a heart-stopping late night lullaby of half-heard vocal fragrances redolent of Altar Eagle albeit within a darkly rhythmic and strange 3D sound sphere. The detailed crevices and dense pop essence of this album takes everything she's done before to incredible new heights, hence our highest recommendation for lovers of midnight electronic romance.
